Carnival in Ancient Rome
In ancient Rome, Carnival was the festival dedicated to Saturn, the king of the gods, who, fearing he would be overthrown, devoured his children. His wife, Rhea, tricked him into swallowing a stone instead of their youngest son, Jupiter.
Jupiter, after defeating his father and the allied Giants, became the king of the gods. Meanwhile, Saturn took refuge in Lazio and ushered in the Golden Age, teaching men agriculture.
The Saturnalia Celebrations
The Saturnalia celebrations honored the mythical Golden Age, when agriculture produced abundant harvests, and there were no masters or slaves. The purpose of the festival was to gain favor from the god for better harvests.
During the festivities, slaves became masters, upending the social order with feasts and banquets.
From Pagan Festivals to Christian Celebrations
In past societies, agricultural festivals were the most important of the year, making it challenging for the Catholic Church to replace them with Christian holidays.
This is why Carnival has remained largely intact, preserving the symbolic significance of masks that allow wearers to embody the characters of their dreams.
